Pay attention: Three-way stop placed at North Shore intersection

A three-way stop sign is expected to be in place today (Wednesday, Dec. 19) at the intersection of North Shore Drive and Buddy Holly Place.  

The Clear Lake City Council approved an ordinance allowing the three-way stop at its meeting Monday.  Enforcement of the traffic sign will begin immediately after placement.  

Public Works Director Joe Weigel noted the stop signs will be oversize (36-inches rather than the usual 30-inches) and will also be marked with flags to make drivers aware of the stop.  Previously traffic on North Shore Drive was not required to stop at Buddy Holly Place.  

The three-way stop should improve safety at the intersection, noted Police Chief Greg Peterson.  He said visibility is somewhat limited looking east and west from Buddy Holly Place.  

In other business Monday, the Council set the timeline to address removal of the Main Avenue water tower.  The 63-year-old elevated water tower has not been in use since March 2012.

Jason Petersburg, an engineer with Veenstra & Kimm of Mason City, reported bid letting for the removal of the water tower will take place at 11 a.m. Jan. 17, 2013.  The Council will consider bids and hold a public hearing on the project at its regular meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 21.  

A tentative timeline for the project would have work begin about Feb. 8, with tower and foundation removal completed by May.  Petersburg told the Council taking down the tower is expected to take only two days.  That will be followed by removal of the foundation and restor- Read More Via e-Edition
