Clear Lake pounds the Comets 44-7

The Clear Lake Lions heated up an otherwise cold night at Lions Field Friday.  The Lions pounded Charles City 44-7 for a Class 3A, District 3 victory.  The win improved the Lions to 3-1 in the District and 5-2 overall.  The Comets remained winless, 0-4, 0-7.

Senior fullback Cody Maulsby had three touchdowns and Gavin Sheakley two in the commanding win.

“It was a good game.  We played well and we took care of business like we should have,” said Head Coach Fred Wieck after the game.  Wieck said the Lions were simply the better team and capitalized on Charles City’s many mistakes.

Tamarik Lee set the tone for the game, sacking the Comet quarterback on his first snap under center.  Charles City was quickly three and out.  Just three plays later Maulsby took the ball into the end zone on a two yard run and Logan Kracht’s kick made the score 7-0.

The Lions’ next possession was just as successful, with Maulsby and Kracht scoring again, 14-0.

Another Comet miscue, a high snap that rolled to the 15, again set up the Lions to score.  On the first play of the second quarter quarterback Brock Adams kept the ball and took it in from the three yard line.  This time the kick missed, making the sore 23-0.

The Lions defense again smothered the Comets and Clear Lake drove the ball from midfield for their fourth score of the first half.  Adams connected with Sheakley for a seven-yard TD pass.  The kick was good for a 30-0 lead.  The margin was pushed to 37-0 on another TD pass to Sheakley and Kracht kick before the half.  The 42-yard reception was Adams’ longest of the night.  He completed five of 10 pass attempts in the game for 130 yards.

The first half ended with Clear Lake outgunning the Comets 258 to -2.  The Lions had 13 first downs, to just - Read More Via e-Edition
