G-H/V/WH cross country teams compete in Dick Bell Invitational

 

Boys place second; girls fourth

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country team competed in the Dick Bell Invitational held Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Eagle Grove.

“This meet gave us a chance to run against several teams that we will see at the State Qualifying Meet 

that will be in Spencer on Oct. 18, so it gave us a chance to see where we need to be at that time,” said Coach Jeff Short.

The boys team placed second with 85 points.  Gilbert won the meet with 79 points.  Eight teams competed in the meet.

Joel Toppin and Chase Smith led the team with a fifth and sixth place finish.  Toppin finished the race in 16:43, while Smith clocked a 16:53.

Brad Nedved was 12th with a time of 17:17.  A.J. Arnold wasn’t far behind with a time of 17:21 and a 14th place finish.  Rounding out the boys score was Aaron Boehnke, 48th, 19:02; Derek Lonneman, 49th, 19:03; and Jeff O’Brien, 50th, 19:08.

The girls finished in fourth place out of 10 teams.  Spencer won the competition with 63 points, followed by Algona with 83, Gilbert with 99 and G-H/V/WH had 110 points.

Kamille Kronemann led the team with a fourth place finish in 16:07.  Tiara VanGerpen was next to cross the finish line for the girls in 17:01 for 18th place.  Also competing were Maribel Zamago, 25th, 17:29; Maria Gonzalez, 29th, 17:46; Maddie Tusha, 34th, 18:05; Dolores Gonzalez, 37th, 18:21; and Taylor Glawe, 46th, 18:42.

The Cardinals will compete in the North Iowa Conference Meet on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Newman Catholic, at 4:30 p.m.
