Lions earn solid 24-7 victory over Webster City

The Clear Lake Lions responded to an uncharacteristic District loss to Humboldt Sept. 21 with a solid 24-7 victory over Webster City Friday night, Sept. 28.

“I’m so happy with the way the kids responded after the loss,” Head Coach Fred Wieck said after the game.  “It went as well as we could have hoped.  We had to have this one.”

The win improved Clear Lake’s record to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Class 3A, District 3.   It was the first District loss for the Lynx, which now join Humboldt at 3-1 in the District.  Clear Lake and Iowa Falls-Alden are at 2-1.

The Lions took control of their game with Webster City in the second half, out-producing the Lynx 168 to 60 yards of offense in the half.  Clear Lake finished with 318 yards in the game, compared to 186 for the Lynx.

The Lions took the lead early on a three-play, 82-yard drive near the end of the first quarter.  The effort was capped by a 42-yard touchdown pass from Brock Adams to Cody Maulsby.  The PAT by Logan Kracht put the Lions up, 7-0.  

In the second quarter, the Lions masterfully moved the ball 70-yards down the field, but were stopped short of another TD.  This time Kracht kicked a 37 yard field goal to provide a 10-0 lead.  

Webster City managed to score at the two-minute mark to pull within three, 10-7.

Another lengthy Lion drive dominated the third quarter and resulted in another touchdown.  Brice Wilcke scored the first of his two second half TDs with just under seven minutes remaining in the third.  On fourth and goal at the one-yard line, the offensive line cleared the way to the end zone for Wilcke.  The drive spanned 69 yards in 16 plays.  A penalty backed up the extra point kick and Kracht just missed his attempt, resulting in a 16-7 lead for the Lions.

Wilcke’s second score was a two-yard run made in the final minute of the third quarter.  A two-point conversion attempt from Adams to Carter Hand was good, 24-7.  

The Clear Lake defense made sure the Lynx would not rise up in the final frame.  Led by Bryson Hamilton, who had two sacks in the fourth quarter, the defensive unit forced the Lynx to punt from their own goal line, and later their own 28.  

Hamilton finished with six total tackles, three of them solo for losses.  Connor Nosbisch was also seemingly everywhere for the Lions.  He had four solo and six tackle assists for a total of 10.  Carson Farmer also finished with six tackles, while Pete Swenson made five, along with a sack.  Steven Akers was also credited with two sacks in the win.  He had three total tackles, two of them for a loss.

In addition to an interception Chandler Diercks had two tackles, one of them for a loss.  Gavin Sheakley also had a pick to go along with his two tackles.  Christian Paulson was also among the leaders in tackles with four.
