Lion harriers hit mid-season stride

The Clear Lake cross country teams are running through the heart of their schedule, competing in two meets last week.  The Lions will participate in four meets over an 11 day stretch.

Humboldt Meet

The Lions ran at the highly competitive Humboldt Meet Monday, Sept. 17.  

“The goal for this meet was to work on race strategy,” explained Coach Nick DiMarco.  “The runners were very disciplined in their approach to this race.  These strategies will be useful in future races.”

The Clear Lake girls team finished seventh overall, while the boys were ninth.

In the girls race, Taylor Hauser, Trudy Peterson and Sierra Greiman practiced running as a pack and finished 14th, 15th and 16th respectively.  Their times were 16:39, 16:42 and 16:46.  Rounding out the varsity scoring was Logan Anderson and Katie Ouverson, placing 91st and 92nd in 19:07 and 19:09.  Also tuning was Amie Adams (106th, 19:33) and Kirsten Reineke (111th, 19:59).

Jake Iverson continues to be the top placing runner for the boys team.  He was 15th in a time of 17:43.  Ryan Faught was next, placing 42nd in 18:24, wile Alex Enabnit was 53rd in 18:56.  Alex Blum finished 61st in 19:04 and M.J. Mixdorf was 74th in 19:22.  Also running in the varsity race was Spencer Orr (86th, 19:47) ad Kaleb Froiland (112th, 21:07).

Two Clear Lake girls competed in the JV race.  Courtney Anderson was 17th in 19:55 and Kelli Gapinski was 57th in 23:54.

In the JV boys race, Jacob Welper led the Lions by finishing 63rd in 21:17.  Other placements included: Jake Harle (98th, 22:31), Joe Schiller (102nd, 22:36), Sam Jones (105th, 22:43), Ben Hillyer (138th, 24:14), Nicholas Holtz (146th, 24:50).

Gene Balk Invitational

Thursday, Sept. 20, the Lions competed against a field of 4A schools at the Gene Balk Invitational held on the NIACC campus in Mason City.  The boys were fourth in the field of five, while the girls were fifth out of six schools.  Mason City won the boys title; Cedar Falls topped the girls teams.

“I am very pleased at how our times continue to drop at this point in the season.  We have several runners setting personal records on a nightly basis,” noted Coach DiMarco.  “This meet was a great test to see what we have to do to be successful later in the season.”

In the boys race the Lion  runners effectively bunched up to help each other.  Jake Iverson led the way, placing 11th in a time of 17:38.  Running with him was Alex Enabnit, 14th in 18:15, and Ryan Faught, 15th in 18:16.  The second group - Read More Via e-Edition
