Van Gerpen leads G-H/V to a huge 54-12 win over West Fork
It was a thrilling night for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football team, as they manhandled West Fork, 54-12, in a home game showdown on Friday. It was the first win of the season for
G-H/V.
The night truly belonged to the Cardinals’, Alex Van Gerpen, who broke the school single game rushing record with 385-yards on 28 carries. He also accounted for seven of the team’s touchdowns.
The Warhawks started the game on a high note, scoring first on a 64-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game. But by the end of the first quarter West Fork could see the writing on the wall. The Cardinals collected five touchdowns for a 34-6 first quarter lead.
Van Gerpen opened the scoring onslaught in the first quarter on a 60-yard run. The PAT failed to tie the score at 6-6. Van Gerpen had an interception that he ran to the 13-yard line. Keith Schwickerath ran it in from the three-yard line for the TD. Van Gerpen ran in the two-point conversion, 13-6. An interception by Braden Meints led to a 36-yard touchdown run by Van Gerpen. Meints kicked the PAT, 20-6. Van Gerpen collected another interception, this one he was able to run in for another TD.
