Lions finish as runner-up in Clarion Volleyball Tournament
The Clear Lake volleyball season got off to a strong start Saturday. The Lions, who won just three matches last season, finished as runner-up this year at the Clarion Tournament with a 5-1 match record. The Lions were 11-2 in sets.
“Overall, the girls played fantastic all day. They were scrappy and competitive and were aggressive blocking and digging for balls,” said second-year Coach Scott Swenson. “I was very impressed with their focus all tournament, but what really caught my attention was the enthusiasm and support of the non-starters. They came off the bench for spot duty and provided a spark when called upon. Those players were Emily Willms, Jeni Hamlin, Ivy Hogg and Sydney Borrill. It was a great team effort this past weekend.”
The Lions defeated all five opponents on their way to the championship match. They defeated Clarion-Goldfield (21-17, 22-20), Northeast Hamilton (21-12, 21-8), Eagle Grove (21-17, 24-22), CAL (21-17, 21-6) and North Butler (21-18, 21-10).
In the championship match North Butler was able to avenge their earlier loss and captured the title, 21-19, 17-21, 15 -9.
Jenna Peterson led the Lions with 18 kills, 40 digs and five aces from the service line. Kaitlyn Pitzen had 18 kills, 36 digs and six aces. Megan Kopriva had 34 digs and Carly Ouverson had 83 assists.
Bailey Kibsgaard was a force at the net with 14 kills and Brianna Haugen contributed with 12 kills and five blocks. Taylor Julsen finished with 10 kills and three blocks .
