Another tough week for girls softball team

The Clear Lake girls had some good performances, but was saddled with five losses last week.  The Lions now stand at 2-16 on the season.  This week the Lions are scheduled to play a doubleheader tonight (Wednesday) at Iowa Falls.  Thursday they will be at Algona Garrigan and Friday they are at Eagle Grove.

  Monday, July 2, they will host Webster City to finish out the regular season.

    The Lions played a doubleheader on the road against St. Ed’s Monday, June 18. 
    Clear Lake pounded out 17 hits in the first game, but couldn’t string them together for enough runs and they were defeated 14-4.
    “We played pretty well, but St. Ed’s is just a very good hitting team,” said Coach Nikki Petersburg.  “We actually had more hits than them (17 to 15 ) and it was a much closer game than the score indicates.  The difference was their hits were multiple bases and resulted in RBIs, while ours were scattered and not with runners in scoring position.  Overall, though, I was happy with our performance.”
    Megan Loux led the team with four hits.  Hailey Grell had three.  Hannah Bartlett, Tori Fyfe and Ryan Pierce had two hits apiece.  Fyfe’s hits resulted in two RBIs. 
    Sara Barlow threw the complete game for the Lions.  She struck out three and walked five.
    Jenna Peterson was on the mound in the second game for the Lions.  The Gaels’ 12 runs were scored on eight hits.  Peterson walked four.
    “Jenna did all we asked of her--threw a lot of strikes,” said the coach.  “The score doesn’t reflect it, but Jenna had several hitters behind in the count before they got their hits.”
    The Lions could only muster one hit in the three inning game.  That came off the bat of Hannah Bartlett. 

Garner 8, CL 3
     Hitting was the difference Tuesday at Garner.  The Cards pounded out 10 hits in their 8-3 victory over the Lions.
    “We needed to bring the runners we got on base in and didn’t get it done.  Garner was prepared to play hard and they did,” said Coach Petersburg.
    The Cardinals started strong and scored three runs in the first inning.  The Lions put two runs on the board in the top of the third to make the score 3-2, but Garner responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, 5-2.  The Lions got one more in the fourth, but then were held scoreless.  The Cardinals sealed the deal by scoring three more in the bottom of the fourth for the 8-3 win.
