Clear Lake ends record-setting soccer season

    Number six ranked (1A) Nevada ended Clear Lake’s record-setting soccer season Friday.  Nevada was a 1-0 winner in the Regional semi-final played Friday at Nevada. The Lions concluded the 2012 season with a 9-5 record-- the most wins in the program’s history.

    One goal scored late in the first half was enough for Nevada, Class 1A’s sixth rated team, to defeat Clear Lake in the Regional semifinals.

    Much of the first half was uneventful, with hard play by both teams,” said Lions Coach Lothar Meyer. 
    Goalkeeper Riley Brinkman effectively stopped a number of threats for the first 35 minutes of play, but a hard running Nevada forward made a quick turn past Lion defenders and scored with just over five minutes left in the half. 
    Coach Meyer said second half scoring opportunities were there, as the Lions made three shots at goal, but were turned away.
    On the night Brinkman defended 11 shots on goal to Nevada’s three.  The Lions also set a school record for goals allowed during the season (eight).
     “Coach (Jerry) Morris and I are  proud of the efforts made by these soccer players tonight, ending the year 9-5 with two school records,” added Meyer.  “We would like to thank all the parents and supporters of the girls program for their encouragement.”
    The Lions graduate four seniors from this years’ successful team.  Defensive captains Alicia Miller and Ashley Miszewski, along with Taylor Barragy and Liz vanRoojin will be missed, said the coaches.
    “With the next season another door opens,” added the coaches.  “Forwards who saw the season end for a flourishing program can keep it going by working hard. They can play with top teams in their class and those in classes higher.”

    In a match which could have had a much higher score, the Lions opened tournament soccer play with a decisive 8-0 victory over Garner-Hayfield. 
    Hat tricks by Hannah Bartlett and Megan Kopriva helped Clear Lake to the most goals ever in the program’s history (51).  The victory also gave the Lions the most wins in school history (nine).
