Girls soccer team drops evenly matched game to Mason City

    It couldn’t have been more even, but after 120-minutes of play the Mason City Mohawks got the win over the Clear Lake girls soccer team Tuesday night.  The Mohawks were 2-1 winners in a double overtime 10 shot place kick shootout.
    The Lions got their goal in the first half from Logan Anderson.

    Mason City received a goal from Nicolle Hewett with 12:34 remaining in regulation. Despite 22 shots at goal by the Lions, the teams were held scoreless for the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime.
    “Thanks to our defense tonight, with help from Keely Branstad and Summer Tannahill and a change in responsibility by Emily Phalen and Alicia Miller, we held Mason City,” said Coach Lothar Meyer.   There were several near misses during each of the 10-minute overtime periods, but neither team was able to score. 
    Each teams’ goalie then successfully fended off shots at goal in a series of place kick attempts.  Mason City’s 11th shot got past Lions goal keeper Riley Brinkman, giving the Mohawks the win.
    “To play 100 minutes and get to a shoot out with 50/50 chances is a long night for the sophomore goal keeper,” said Coach Lothar Meyer. 
    Brinkman was credited with 10 saves in the game. Coach Meyer also noted Brinkman set a program record by allowing just eight goals during the regular season. 
    Clear Lake (8-4) travels to Garner-Hayfield today (Wednesday, May 30) for Regional play.  The Lions, who have defeated the Cardinals twice during the regular season, need just one more win to set a program record for victories in a single season.
