Lynx end season for the Lions

The season came to a close for the Clear Lake soccer team in the first round of Sub-State played Monday, May 21, at Webster City.  For the second time in just over a week the Lynx dominated the Lions.  They won, 9-0
    “We entered the contest feeling pretty good about the changes made to strengthen our defense,” said Coach Matt Anderson.  “Good teams have a way of creating their own luck and Webster City did that.”

      In the seventh minute the Lynx scored off a throw in for a header goal.  Three minutes later, the ball was deflected from a kick by keeper Bryson Hamilton and went straight back into the net for another score.  In the 18th minute Webster City made an attack on goal.  In the scramble, defender Carson Farmer used his hand to prevent a goal.  Farmer was given a red card and removed from the contest.  The Lions played with 10 guys the rest of the contest, as you are not allowed to place a sub on the field when a red card is issued.
    “Farmer has been the corner stone of our team all year.  There were very few games when he didn’t play the entire 80 minutes of every contest.  Losing him that early in the match is hard to recover from.  I was proud of how the guys continued to fight.  We coined a saying early on about not having an off switch.  The guys could have shut down, but just like they practiced all season they did not,” said Coach Anderson.
    Webster City converted the penalty kick for a score and got an additional penalty kick in the 39th minute which was converted for a goal.  The score at half was 4-0.  
    Webster City scored two more goals in the 46th and 76th minute of the contest.  Keeper Bryson Hamilton finished the night with 14 saves.  
    “It was not the way any of us wanted the season to end that’s for sure,” added the coach.  “The only way you can ever be happy with ending a season is to win the championship game.  As a coach I am hopeful a bitter pill this season motivates the guys to make some magic next season.  We are young enough and have enough talent to be extremely good.  The only question is if the guys will do the little things to get there.  Time in the gym lifting, time with the ball, and becoming faster sprinters will no doubt lead to success.”
    The Lions finished the season with a record of 7-7.

    Parent’s Night and Senior Night on May 17 was a winner.  The Lions shut out Iowa Falls-Alden, 4-0.  Seniors Aaron Reese, Jake Branstad, Austin Perego and Devin Thomas were playing in their final home contest. The win put the Lions’ record at 7-7.
    The Lions got on the board quickly with Antonio DiMarco making an attack up the left side line in the second minute of the contest.   Around the 30-yard mark DiMarco put a thunder thigh into the ball which wasn’t going to be stopped.  
    “DiMarco has unmatched velocity when he makes contact on the ball,” said Coach Matt Anderson.
