M. Wayne Oltrogge, 74, died peacefully Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Oakwood Manor, Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 14 at First United Methodist Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Interment followed at St. John Lutheran Church - Crane Creek near Tripoli, Iowa.
Marlyn Wayne Oltrogge was born Jan. 14, 1938 to Elfrieda and Clarence H. Oltrogge on the family farm in Bremer County, Iowa. The fourth of five children, Wayne was baptized (Feb. 13, 1938) and confirmed (April 6, 1952) at St. John Lutheran Church - Crane Creek. He attended Fremont No. 8 one room country school through eighth grade, continuing on to high school in Tripoli, where he graduated in 1956. He attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in May, 1963. He moved to Clear Lake later that summer as an associate with Boyle Schuler Law Firm. Wayne married Nada Stuart Faust on April 8, 1961, and raised three children, divorcing in 1984.
Wayne established Oltrogge Law Firm in 1974 and continued his practice until retirement in 2003. He served as president of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce (1973-74), and was a member of the American Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association, the Second Judicial District Bar Association, the Cerro Gordo County Bar Association and the Iowa Association of Trial Lawyers. He was also active in establishing Opportunity Village and served on its board for 16 years. He was a faithful and devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Mason City, the Democratic Party and the American Civil Liberties Union. Wayne loved his Iowa Hawkeyes and attended many football games in Iowa City. Later, he loyally followed them from afar. He also loved to hear about his granddaughter Emily’s hockey games and sailing races. He enjoyed sailing, flying, fishing, traveling the Midwest on his Goldwing motorcycle, and giving treats to Maddie, Susan’s dog.
Wayne is survived by his son, Stuart (Julie) Oltrogge of Eagan, Minn.; and daughters, Susan (Joel Happel) Oltrogge and Sarah Oltrogge and her special friend Mark Heggen, all of Des Moines; granddaughter, Emily Oltrogge of Eagan, Minn.; brother, Gene (Alice) Oltrogge of Dallas, Texas; sister, Marjorie (Dalton) Kowalsky of La Porte City; sister, Burdene (Don) Atalig of Garner, Iowa and sister-in-law, Geri Oltrogge of New Hampton, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Elfrieda; and one brother, Lloyd Oltrogge.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Oakwood Manor for their loving care of Wayne, particularly Julie Eckert with whom he shared great affection. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Opportunity Village, Clear Lake; St. John Lutheran Church - Crane Creek, Tripoli; and First United Methodist Church of Mason City.
