Toppin and Watson earn All-Conference recognition

Joel Toppin and Joel Watson each earned recognition on the Cornbelt All-Conference teams for the 2011-12 season.  Toppin, a sophomore, was named First Team All-Conference, while Watson, a senior, received Honorable Mention recognition.

    Toppin was the point guard and led the team on offense.  Toppin averaged 11.4 points a game.  He had 212 total points for the season and connected on 33 three-point shots.  He also led the team in assists with 41 and steals with 23.  He was the second leading rebounder on the team with a total of 70 boards, an average of 3.2 a game.
    “Joel (Toppin) had to do many things for this team.  He was our primary ball handler, especially against pressure defenses.  He was asked to shoot the three, as well as penetrate and create his own shot, as well as shots for his teammates,” said Coach Chad Brown.  “He was also asked to take a tough defensive assignment and many times would play all 32 minutes of the game.  He rose to the occasion, despite being just a sophomore.”
    Watson was the team’s leading defensive player.  He led the team in rebounding with 102 total boards for the season; he averaged 4.6 rebounds a game.  He was the team’s second leading scorer, collecting 139 points for the season and he averaged 6.3 points a game.  Other statistics included 33 assists for the season and 17 steals.
