Knights end the season for Lady Vikes
A tough first quarter doomed the Lady Vikes in the second round of Class 1A District basketball action on Tuesday, Feb. 14. They fell to Newman Catholic, 52-41.
“Newman came out in the first quarter and hit everything,” said Coach Rod Huber. “I thought we outplayed them the rest of the way, but the first quarter put us into too big of a hole.”
With baskets falling for the Knights, and not for the Lady Vikes, Newman cruised to an early 18-7 first quarter lead. Newman stretched the lead to 20-7, before Ventura gained some ground and put points on the board for a halftime score of 29-20.
The battle continued following the break. Newman went up by 12 points but Ventura fought back to within seven for a third quarter score of 35-28.
Newman sealed the game in the fourth quarter by scoring seven unanswered points. The Lady Vikes kept fighting and grabbed a couple of key steals and scored six unanswered points of their own, but it was a little too late, as time expired and the Knights earned the 52-41 win.
“I want to commend Courtney Younge, who played extremely tough defense on Jessica Balek, who was an All-Stater. Courtney held her to just nine points in three quarters,” said Huber.
