Newman takes Ventura out of Regional competition

  A large Ventura crowd showed up at Newman on Tuesday night, Oct. 25, to cheer on the Lady Vikes in the second round of Regional competition.  Unfortunately, missed serves, hitting errors and miscommunications led to a 3-1 loss to the Knights.
    The Lady Vikes came out swinging in the first game and captured a 25-18 victory.

    “We knew going into the game that we would have to fight for this win.  The girls played well as a team in the first match,” said Coach Abby Roenfanz.
    The second and third matches didn’t go as well for Ventura, with too many key mistakes being made.  Newman won the next two matches, 25-17 and 25-14.
    Ventura regained some of their first game momentum in the fourth game.  They took a comfortable lead, but Newman battled back and won the final match, 25-23.
    “These girls put in a tremendous amount of hard work throughout this season and I am very proud of them for what they’ve done.  I know things didn’t end the way any of us wanted, but everyone did their best and at the end of the day, that’s all anyone can ask,” said Roenfanz.
    Emily Mathews led the team in a number of categories.  At the net she was 21/29 hitting with 10 kills, she had four assisted blocks and one solo block.  At the service line she was 12/15 serving with three ace serves.  She also led the team in digs with 17.
    Morgan Ames also had an excellent night for the Lady Vikes.  She was 20/26 hitting with 10 kills.  She had three digs and one solo block.
    Shelby Rayhons was 11/15 hitting with seven kills.  At the service line she was 9/12 with two aces.  Rayhons was right behind Mathews in the dig category with 16.
