Lady Vikes move to 2-0 in Conference
It was a successful week on the road for the Ventura volleyball team, as they picked up two wins.
Ventura vs. CCE
The Lady Vikes topped Clay Central-Everly Tuesday night, Sept. 20. Ventura won a close first game, 25-21. They dropped the second game, 25-20, before going on to win the next two games, 25-22 and 25-18.
“We really came together tonight as a team,” said Coach Abby Roenfanz. “I am very proud of how well they played and were able to adapt. They kept their heads up even when down and fought for every point.”
Morgan Ames had a great night at the net, hitting 17/23 with a game high 11 kills. Brittani Watson also had a good night, hitting 11/17 with seven kills, two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Shelby Rayhons was 17/19 at the net with six kills, while Emily Mathews was 14/18 with five kills, three solo blocks and four assisted blocks.
Rayhons led the team at the service line with a perfect 16/16 and two aces. Courtney Younge was 14/15 with two aces and Sebelia Markle was 13/15 with one ace.
Defensive leaders included Rayhons and Younge with 14 digs apiece. Miranda Frederick had eight digs, while Hallie Hall and Emily Mathews each had seven.
Younge led the team in assists with 18. Markle contributed five assists.
Ventura vs. North Iowa
Ventura was back on the road Thursday, Sept. 22, this time to Buffalo Center to take on North Iowa. It was a battle to the end, but the Lady Vikes pulled off the win in five games. Ventura won the first match, 25-20, dropped the second and third matches by scores of 25-20 and 25-17. They battled back and won the last two, 25-22 and 16-14.
“The girls did a phenomenal job and they never quit. Throughout the entire match they showed a fighting spirit and even when down two games to one they kept their heads up and pulled out a win,” said Coach Abby Roenfanz.
