Holly, Valens, Richardson families will attend park dedication

    The City of Clear Lake, along with the Surf Ballroom & Museum and Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, will honor Buddy Holly, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and Ritchie Valens, with a special event on Thursday, Oct. 13.  The event dedicating the recently completed Three Stars Plaza will also feature an unveiling of the central art feature which celebrates

the legacies of the three artists.
    Holly, Richardson and Valens were killed in a February 1959 plane crash just north of Clear Lake following a concert at the Surf Ballroom.
     The Three Stars Plaza was made possible when the City of Clear Lake purchased the former Nelson’s Amoco Station on North Shore Drive.  The city commissioned RDG of Omaha, Neb., to conceptually design the Plaza and surrounding streetscapes.  RDG extensively researched the area to ensure that the design was consistent with the style of the Surf Ballroom and that the different elements of the project were complimentary to one another.  RDG designed the central art feature as a way to promote the legacy of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson.
