Joseph Ryan, Jr. Winston Watson Joe met Madonna in 1994 and
they married two years later. He
Joseph B. Ryan, Jr., 84, died
peacefully April 14, 2016, from Par-
kinson related causes, surrounded
by family at his home in West Des
Moines, Iowa.
A memorial service was held
on Wednesday, April 20, at the St.
Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, Des
Moines, immediately followed by
a celebration of life reception at
Edgewater, West Des Moines.
Joe lived a wonderful life. He
loved two great women, had a fam-
ily who adored him, was a success in
business, and had many dear friends.
Not long after Joe was born in
Hollywood, Calif. on May 12, 1931,
his family moved to Colfax, Iowa.
In 1937, Joe moved to Des Moines
and graduated from Roosevelt High
School in 1949. He attended the Uni-
versity of Iowa and was very active in
his Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the
campus R.O.T.C. Joe received his
Bachelors degree from Drake Univer-
sity in 1953. After graduation, Joe
served several years in the U.S. Air
Force, stationed in Alaska. Joe and
his first wife, Anne, were married
in 1953. They spent 40 happy years
together and raised three daughters.
Anne died of cancer in 1993.
Joe enjoyed considerable success
in the field of business, culminating
in serving as CEO of Delavan,
Inc. a company with international
manufacturing sites and clients.

Wood chips given
away this week
The Cerro Gordo County Con-
servation Board ROW Management
staff will be giving away a portion of
its stockpile of wood chips at Lime
Creek Nature Center through April
29. Mulch will be loaded into small
trailers or trucks with the assistance
of a tractor at 7:45 a.m. and 3:30
p.m. each day. Smaller quantities
may be loaded by hand.
A limited supply is available to
the public, so individuals interested
in wood chips must contact the
Cerro Gordo County Conservation
Board at 641-423-5309 to reserve a
day and time for pick up.

Always very active in local and state
affairs, Joe served on numerous boards,
committees, and state commissions,
a few included were: the Blank Park
Zoo Board, West Des Moines Board
of Appeals, State of Iowa Health
Facilities Council, and the West Des
Moines Development Corporation.
Joe’s business acumen was sought after
by numerous boards, a few included
were: Cottingham & Butler, St.
Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, and the
American Business and Industry. In
1999, Joe was recognized as WDM’s
Man of the Year for his numerous
contributions to the community.

a full and beautiful life together for
the next 22 years.

of Woodbury, Minn.; by his 10
grandchildren, Jessica Ruth (Alan);
Susan Pitzen; Sara Ryan Barba (Luis);
John Sipe (Tiffany); Allison Ryan;
Joseph Ryan; Anne Lampright;
Jacob Kuyper; Lauren Lampright;
and Megan Lampright; and by his
three great-grandchildren, Sydney,
Benjamin and Isabella Ruth; and by
his cousins, John and Alice Butler.
Preceding Joe in death were his
wife, Anne Welch Ryan; and son-in-
law, Timothy Hayes.
In honor of Joe and in lieu of
flowers, memorials can be made to
the JBR Memorial Fund created to
gift Edgewater residents a flower gar-
den, and a new sailboat for the sailing
school in Clear Lake. Send memorials

OBITUARIES
Winston “Win” M. Watson, 83,
Clear Lake, died Wednesday, April 20,
2016, at the Oakwood Care Center,
Clear Lake.
A Celebration of Win’s Life will be
held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 29, 2016,
at the Clear Lake United Methodist
Church, 508 2nd Ave N., Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Dr. Jacqueline
Thompson officiating. Visitation with
family will be Thursday, 5-7 p.m. at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101
N. 4th St., Clear Lake and then one
hour before the service at the church.
Inurnment will be at the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Military honors will be
provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Memorials may be given to The
Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice of
North Iowa or the Clear Lake United
Methodist Church.
Win was born Aug. 29, 1932 in
Harlan, Iowa, the son of Marshall
Chester and Laura (Adams) Watson.
He graduated from State Center High
School in 1950. Win went to Coe
College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where
he earned a BA degree in English-
Journalism. He was president of the
TKE fraternity and lettered in football
and baseball. While in college he
was in R.O.T.C, commissioned as
a second lieutenant and completed
his pilot training. He served in the
United States Air Force as a pilot in the Branch, Iowa and Erin (Jake) Krehbiel,
40th Air Refueling Squadron, Salina
Kan. and overseas duty in Laborador
and Greenland. He was honorably
discharged.
Win followed in his parent’s career
business. He worked as the sports
editor in the Ames Daily Tribune,
co-publisher and editor of the Traer
Star-Clipper, General manager of
Mid-America Publishing Corp, in Des
Moines, publisher of the Cedar Valley
Stephen Carr
Stephen (Steve) Carr died
peacefully at his winter home at
Adobe Wells Park, in McAllen, Texas,
on April 14, 2016.
A memorial celebration of his
life will be held May 10, 2016, at 4
p.m., at First Methodist Church, 516
Kellogg Ave., Ames, Iowa.
Steve was born Dec. 21, 1940 in
Ames, Iowa and attended Ames High

Daily Times, Vinton, and and was
general manager of the Mid-American
field office located in Clear Lake. The
office oversaw 13 newspapers including
the Clear Lake Reporter.
Win’s next career paths led him
to work in the insurance and realty
businesses. He co-owned and
managed the North Central Insurance
Service in Ventura, Iowa, which
represented independent insurance
agencies dealing with a large number
of farmers in the county and town
dwellers as well.
Win also got his realtor and brokers
license. He worked with Triad Realty
for five years and then he started Win
Watson and Associates. In addition to
providing general real estate services,
he specialized in brokering newspapers
throughout the state.
He married Lois Lawson and to
this union four children, Wendy, Lisa,
Wade and Winston “Chip”, were born.
Win married Nancy Louise Johnson
on June 9, 1976, in Las Vegas, Nev.,
and to this union one daughter, Erin,
was born. He was a member of the
Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
He was an avid Hawkeye fan traveling
to every Big Ten Stadium, spending
leisure time on the lake, socializing
with family and friends and supporting
Clear Lake events.
Win’s civic involvement
encompassed many towns and people.
He was a member of the Traer Jaycees,
President of the Traer Chamber of
Commerce, President of the Vinton
Lions Club; Vinton City Councilman
and Mayor; director of the Clear Lake
Board of Realtors; Clear lake Area
Chamber of Commerce President
and board member for many
years; Harbourage Home Owners
Association director and past president.
Win is survived by his wife, Nancy
Watson, Clear Lake; five children,
Wendy Watson, Stanwood, Iowa,
Lisa Sweeting, Iowa City, Iowa, Wade
Watson, West Branch, Iowa, Winston
“Chip” (Donna) Watson, West
Waukee, Iowa; and six grandchildren,
Betsy Sweeting, Iowa City, Brook
Sweeting, Carson City, Nev., Gabriel
“Gabe” Watson, Chicago, Ill., Koen,
Winston and Isla Krehbiel, Waukee,
Iowa.
Win was preceded in death by
his parents; and one brother, Justin
Watson.

tecture. He worked in Roadside De-
velopment for the Iowa D.O.T. until
he and his wife, Diane, purchased the
Oaks Golf Course in Ames, and oper-
ated it for 16 years until they retired to
Clear Lake.
Steve was a loving husband and
father and a loyal friend to many. He
was an avid golfer and bowler and a
past Worshipful Master of the Lodge
in the Masonic Temple. Steve enjoyed
spending winters in McAllen, and he
spent the last 15 years in Clear Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 35
years, Diane (Barr) Carr, of Clear
Lake; his daughter, Cheron Lyn Carr,
of Madison, Wis.; stepdaughter, Mi-
chelle Annette Mark, of Roswell, Ga.;
two brothers, Phillip (Jeannie) Carr,
of Sparks, Nev., Donald (Kathleen)
Carr, of Priest River, Id.; and several
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one
brother, Roger Carr; father, Herbert
Carr; and mother, Phyllis (Davidson)
Carr.

Virgil married Elaine Hellzen on
Jan. 19, 1946 at the Brunswick Luther-
