Wrestlers place third at Forest City
The Clear Lake wrestling team placed third in the eight-team Forest City Invite on Saturday. The Lions nearly placed second, losing 153 to 152 to Algona. Charles City ran away with the team title.
“We did beat a good Forest City team and Emmetsburg is ranked in the top 10 in state, so we had a pretty good day,” said Lions Head Coach Gary Weber. “A lot of kids got beat early in the day and showed a lot of mental toughness by battling back to go for third and fourth. “As long as we keep listening and improving, that is all our staff can ask for.”
Ryan Schmalen was the lone champion for the Lions. Schmalen had an exciting overtime win over Max Forsyth, of Charles City, in the finals. Ryan Faught made the finals, but was narrowly defeated 3-2.
Here is the coach’s recap of the tournament:

113: Brennen Doebel, 3-1, third place. Brennen wrestled awesome. He only weighs 108 and is wrestling 115. We are working on his style and he wrestled very intelligently Saturday and it showed in the win column.
120 Ryan Faught, second place. Ryan is one of the hardest working kids we have. He made a couple of technical mistakes that we can work on. His effort is always there.
126 Spencer Orr, 2-2, fourth place. Spencer is having a great freshman year. He is extremely coachable and is improving every week.
132: Sam Lakose, 0-2. Sam actually wrestled pretty well. He just had a couple of tough kids. He fought hard.
138: Carson Farmer, 3-1, third place. Carson had two big pins when he was trailing on points. His intensity is becoming more consistent and he is improving.
145: Aaron Boeshart, 3-1, third place. Aaron is making big strides. If he stays off his hip and keeps listening, he could be on the podium at state.
152: Blake Kelso, fourth place. Blake is hustling - Read More Via e-Edition
