Woman critical after hit by truck
A Clear Lake woman was in critical condition Tuesday morning after she was struck by a vehicle in downtown Clear Lake.
According to a news release issued by the Clear Lake Police Department early Tuesday afternoon, the department received several 911 calls at 9:29 a.m. Tuesday (April 3) of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident
which occurred at the corner of Main Avenue and 4th Street. When police arrived they found 73-year-old Carolyn Mahaffey lying in the middle of the intersection being attended to by several people. Mahaffey had obvious trauma to her head, according to the report.
Also present was the driver of the truck that had struck her, 87-year-old Max Christensen, of Clear Lake.
According to witnesses, Christensen’s truck struck Mahaffey in the crosswalk as it traveled south across the intersection.
Mahaffey was transported by Clear Lake Ambulance to the emergency room of Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Due to the seriousness of the injuries sustained by Mahaffey, the Clear Lake Police requested that the Iowa State Patrol send an accident reconstruction expert in to do the investigation.
No charges had been filed at the time of the news release, as the investigation into the accident continues.
