A win and a loss for Ventura girls

The Ventura girls picked up a non-conference win, but dropped a Cornbelt Conference match-up in basketball action last week.

It was a game of quickness and aggression when the Ventura girls visited West Bend-Mallard on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
The Lady Vikes came out strong and scored the first seven points.  Unfortunately, that was the only highlight, as the

Wolverines took it from there and scored 17 straight points for a 17-7 first quarter lead.
Poor free throw shooting doomed Ventura in the second quarter and WB-M stretched the lead to 31-14.
“We got passive in the first quarter and never regrouped,” said Coach Rod Huber.  “West Bend is a very athletic team and their aggressive defense plays well to their strengths.”
The second half was more of the same, with the quick Wolverine guards causing problems.  WB-M won the conference contest, 54-36.
Emily Mathews had a double-double for the night, with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  She also had one assist, one steal and two blocked shots.
Rounding out the scoring was Emily Spilman with eight points, Courtney Younge and Shelby Rayhons each had five points, while Sydney Younge added four.  Hallie Hall and Morgan Ames had two points apiece.
Other rebound leaders included Hall and Rayhons with five apiece and both Younge girls grabbed four rebounds.
Rayhons led the team in steals with three.  Courtney Younge and Hall had two blocked shots apiece.

The Ventura girls regrouped after their West Bend-Mallard loss and came back to dominate non-conference foe Central Springs, 38-20.
“The girls came to practice and cleaned up the areas that we struggled with, which is a good sign heading into District play.  We are 6-3 since the break and are really starting to understand roles and responsibilities.  Hopefully we can make a deep District run,” said Huber.
