A win and a loss for CL girls soccer team
The Clear Lake girls soccer team had an even week, splitting games with Mason City and Humboldt.
Mason City 6, CL 0
The Lions started the week on Tuesday, April 14, with a 6-0 loss to Mason City. The Mohawks put a lot of pressure on the young Lions team from the start and held a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
The Mohawks’ strategy continued to wear down the Lions and they scored four more goals late in the game.
The Lion defense was led by Erin O’Tool, Jessica Faber, Brie Wagler and Ellie Tindall.
“They worked nonstop the entire game to try to slow the Mohawk attack,” said Coach Nick DiMarco. He noted his Lions showed a lot of improvement over their first game, but could not string together enough passes to mount an offensive attack.
Ellie Biebesheimer finished with 10 saves as the Lions’ keeper.
CL 2, Humboldt 0
The Lion’s hosted the Humboldt Bulldogs on Friday, April 17. The offense was back to full strength, with Emily Phalen returning from a two game injury.
The Lions controlled the ball most of the game and scored their first goal of the season at the 20th minute of the game on a crossing pass from Phalen to a charging Erin O’Tool for the goal.
The period ended 1-0 with Clear Lake in control.
The second half played out much as the first, with Clear Lake possessing the ball for the majority of the time.Phalen put the game out of reach at the 75th minute putting two nifty moves on the defenders before burying the ball into the net.
Coach Nick DiMarco said keys to the game included getting O’Tool more involved in the offense, Kaye Faber managing the midfield, and Jessica Faber controlling the back line. Freshmen Lexi Holtz and Lizzie Lakose provided excellent pressure on the defensive end, he said.
“Overall, this was the Lion’s best team effort and everyone who stepped foot on the pitch deserves credit for the win,” said DiMarco.
Ellie Biebesheimer finished the night with three saves in the shutout.
