A week of ups and downs for GHV girls soccer team
IF-A 4, GHV 3 (OT)
The GHV girls gave it their all, but came up just short, falling to Iowa Falls-Alden, 4-3, in overtime on Monday, April 21.
“Iowa Falls has a great, young team,” said Coach Josh Banse. “I thought our strikers and mid-fielders did a good job keeping us in the game.”
Scoring one goal each for the Cardinals was Emily Spilman, Hannah Lau and Mackenzie Haag.
Spilman and Haag each had one assist.
Goalkeeper Sam Betz had six saves and allowed four goals in Monday night’s match.
Fort Dodge 8, GHV 1
According to Coach Josh Banse, Fort Dodge was the best team the Cardinals have met in all three years of the program. The Dodger’s outscored GHV, 8-1, for the victory.
Despite Fort Dodgers skill, GHV did manage one goal. Hannah Sokol scored the Cardinal’s lone goal.
“This was Hannah’s first varsity goal of her career,” said Banse. “She is developing into a nice player.”
Banse praised the work of his defensive players, Maddie Tusha, Tiara Van Gerpen and Mackenzie Haag for battling hard and never giving up.
A low part of the game was when GHV’s starting goal keeper, Sam Betz, had to leave the game with a concussion. Shelby Rayhons filled in and got her first taste of playing goalie. Betz recorded nine saves before leaving the game and Rayhons did an excellent job collecting eight saves in her rookie outing.
