Waterfowl feeding law goes into effect

The Clear Lake City Council passed a new ordinance prohibiting the feeding of waterfowl within 300-feet of any City owned and maintained recreation area during its regular meeting Monday night, May 20.  The third reading of the ordinance was waived, putting the measure into effect with the publication of a notice appearing in this week’s Mirror-Reporter (page 18).

The new law encompasses City Beach and North Lakeview Drive, between Main Avenue and 4th Avenue N., typically known as the area of the Seawall and North Lakeview Drive walkway.

The proposed ordinance was created after reviewing many similar ordinances in place in other Iowa cities.

The Council, which voted unanimously on the measure, received recommendations for passage of the ordinance from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department,  Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Association for the Preservation of Clear Lake. Groups cited public health issues, along with the amount of money and effort spent on cleaning up the lake, as reasons to pass the ordinance prohibiting the feeding of waterfowl, especially at City Beach or on the lake.
