Waldron earns medalist honors; Lions place third
Clear Lake’s Dane Waldron earned his own version of a Master’s green jacket as medalist at the 2015 Dutch Master’s held at Bos Landing at Pella Saturday. Waldron, a junior, claimed medalist honors with a 76, three strokes better than runner-up Spencer Tucker, of Oskaloosa. Coleton Hoepker, of Creston with an 81.
Waldron led the Lions to a third place finish out of 11-teams. Williamsburg won the team title on a fifth score tie-breaker over Creston. Both teams finished with 342. The Lions came into the clubhouse with a 346. Pella Green finished fourth with 352, followed by Knoxville with 359 and PCM with 367.
“It was an extremely challenging course at Bos Landing. The course is very tight, with no room for error,” said Clear Lake Coach Eric Perry. “The secluded holes do not allow for mishitting the ball, or you are penalized. The spring time wind was no different, very strong. All the scores were high, except Dane played like a man on a mission.”
Jon Carew also had a good first outing of the season, coming in with an 86.
“Jon had some penalty stokes and played very solid,” said Coach Perry.
The Lions’ team scored was rounded out by Thomas Storbeck’s 91 and Anthony Piscopo’s 93. Tanner Storbeck and Austin Rurup carded a 95 and 97 respectively.
“One thing is for sure,” said Perry. “We have a lot to work on and need improvement. I like that-- a challenge. We will be much better as the season grows.”
