Very good week for Lions

It was a good week for the Clear Lake boys soccer team.  Make that a very good week.  The Lions recorded two shutouts and claimed the championship at the Boone Tournament Saturday.

CL 9, GHV 0

The Lions started the week by hosting Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Tuesday, April 22.  For the second time this season the Lions prevailed.  

Ernie Miszewski started the scoring for the Lions in the 12th minute with a penalty kick.  In the 19th minute Jack Finn sent a corner kick to Antonio DiMarco, who headed the ball off the goal post.  Jack Abbas collected the rebound and converted a header goal with Finn and DiMarco receiving credit for the double assist.  

Finn converted a goal in the 21st minute and Miszewski followed suit with a another goal in the 21st minute off an assist from DiMarco.  Jarod Anderson finished an attack for a goal in the 27th minute.  The last goal of the first half was completed by Abbas, off an assist by Finn.  

The first goal of the second half came off a corner kick by Finn.  The ball bounced off a GHV defender going into the net in the 44th minute.  Finn started the scoring for the Lions in the second half with a goal in the 51st minute.  MJ Mixdorf finished the scoring off an assist from DiMarco in the 51st minute.  

The final score of the contest was 9-0.  

“I was pleased with how the defense took ownership of the game,” said Coach Matt Anderson.  “Offensively, we were more team orientated tonight, which led to some great shots on goal.”

Jacob Hogan ended the night with two saves at the keeper position.

GHV goalkeeper JJ Loschen made 17 saves in the game. 

 

CL 4, IF-A 0

The Lions boys soccer team played  in Alden Thursday against the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.  Ernie Miszewski converted a penalty kick at the 21st minute to give the Lions a 1-0 lead at half time.  Miszewski scored another goal in the 43rd minute.  

At the fifth minute, Jack Finn sent a corner kick into the box which resulted in a goal. In the 76th minute Miszewski was intentionally fouled, which rested in another penalty kick for the final score of the match for a 4-0 win.  It was the second shut out of the season, with more to come, promised Coach Anderson. 

 

Boone Tournament

The Lions recorded their fourth shut-out win of the season just two days later, as the Lions claimed the title at the Boone Tournament.  Clear Lake defeated Boone in the championship, 4-0.

  The Lions made their way to the championship with a 2-0 victory over Western Central Stuart in the first round.  Jack Finn opened the scoring for the Lions in the 41st minute.  Antonio DiMarco took a shot on goal from the 18, which was deflected by the keeper.  Finn got the rebound and took a shot on goal which was again deflected by the keeper.  Finn gathered the ball again and this time placed it in the back of the net.  The second score of the contest came off a series of passes.  Jarod Anderson put the ball in play off a direct kick to MJ Mixdorf.  Mixdorf played the ball to DiMarco, who one touched the ball to Alex Gonzalez, who one touched the ball back to Mixdorf.  Mixdorf made an attack to the goal line and passed the ball back to Gonzalez, who finished the pass for the final goal.  Jacob Hogan recorded one save in the match.

Against Boone, Ernie Miszewski got the Lions started early with a goal in the sixth minute.  Finn passed the ball to DiMarco in the 20th minute for the second score of the contest and a 2-0 lead at halftime.  In the 31st minute, Miszewski made an attack on goal passing the ball to DiMarco for the third goal.  The final score of the contest came off a pass from DiMarco to Anderson.  Anderson was fouled in the goal box as he was attempting to take a shot on goal.  Anderson converted the penalty kick for the 4-0 win.  Bryce Schmalen recorded one save in this match.
