Two more wins for CL boys soccer team
The Clear Lake boys tacked on two more wins on the soccer field last week.
CL 6, Humboldt 2
The Lions traveled to Humboldt Monday, April 27, and posted a 6-2 victory.
In the fifth minute Tanner Berger made an assist to Jack Finn for the first goal of the contest. The lead was short-lives, as Humboldt responded with a corner kid for a goal just two-minutes later.
Finn finished an attack in the 39th minute to give the Lions a 2-1 lead at half.
Humboldt tied the match again with a goal in the 68th minute. In the 74th minute Jarod Anderson finished an attack for a 3-2 lead. Seconds later, Ernie Miszewski made an assist to Finn for a header goal. Two minutes later Finn assisted MJ Mixdorf for a goal.
The final goal of the night for the Lions came in the 74th minute when Anderson had the ball deflected by the Humboldt keeper to the middle of the field. Ryan Faught gathered the ball and placed it in the net for the final score, 6-2.
“This match was a battle of strategies,” said Clear Lake Coach Matt Anderson. “Humboldt played excessively defensive, placing every player in the penalty box. It worked well for them for 68 minutes. It was a good match for us to experience, as I am sure we very well may see this same strategy as the season continues. There were many lessons to take away from this type of a match. The boys fought through and probably felt like they took a hundred shots by the end of the match. I am confident we’ll handle a defensive approach much better the next time around.”
CL 6, GHV 1
Coming into their Friday, May 1, contest Coach Matt Anderson knew Garner was playing some good soccer.
“I had stressed to the team not to over look them,” he said. “Not sure if they did not believe me, or if they weren’t all that focused, but Garner had too many opportunities to take a lead into the halftime break.”
The Lions got their first score in the fifth minute of the contest. Jarod Anderson scored a goal off an assist by Tanner Berger. In the 23rd minute, Jack Finn finished an attack for goal to put the Lions ahead, 2-0.
Garner responded with a goal in the 25th minute for a 2-1 half time score.
Clear Lake’s offense came alive in the second half, starting in the 45th minute when Berger scored a goal from an assist from MJ Mixdorf. In the 66th minute Niko Padilla scored. In the 73rd minute Anderson scored another goal and Luis Padilla finished the last goal of the night in the 79th minute for a 6-1 Lion victory.
The coach said he was happier with his teams’ second half performance, but noted they have work to do before their next four games, which will be against top rated teams in 1A and 2A. “Defense is a team effort and we’ll be stressing that everyday for the rest of the season,” said Anderson. “I was pretty hard on the boys at the halftime. If you’re going to be a top rated team then you better play like it, every time.”
