Tough season ends for Clear Lake softball team

Decorah tops Lions in District action

    The season came to an end last week for the Clear Lake softball team.  After dropping their final regular season game to Webster City, Decorah topped the Lions in the opening round of District play Friday. 
    The Lions finished the season with a 2-25 record.
    “Overall, this was a rough season.  It’s difficult to lose on a regular basis and be expected to keep playing with

heart and determination,” said Head Coach Nicki Petersburg.  “The fact that we made it through the season and as a team proves we have some grit.  This season forced us all to grow and dig deep on a personal level.  It’s the kind of thing that is miserable to experience but builds character in the end.  I know it may seem ridiculous to say, but we probably gained a lot by surviving this season.  Playing so well against Decorah means we have true spirit and that it wasn’t broken, something that bodes well for next year.”

    Webster City broke open the gate in the fourth inning with five runs and topped the Lions in five, 12-0. 
    “We talked about having nothing to lose in this game and the girls did that,” said Coach Petersburg.  “We made some great defensive plays and forced Webster City to earn their win.  We also got on base and were able to put the pressure on the defense.”
    Megan Loux and Kaitlyn Pitzen were the only Lions to get hits in the conference finale. 
    Sara Barlow pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up 12 runs on 12 hits.  She struck out three and walked two.  Reagan Brackey gave up one hit in one-third innings pitched.
