Tough night for G-H/V grapplers
It was a rough night for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team when they met two powerhouse teams at the Newman Catholic duals on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Newman.
St. Edmond dominated the competition with wins over both Newman Catholic and G-H/V. The Gaels topped
Newman, 69-12, and dominated the Cardinals, 78-6. The Knights topped G-H/V, 57-18.
“On the night, I felt we did not wrestle to our potential,” said Coach Steve Smith. “We were missing a few kids in the line up due to injury, which hurts worse with the low numbers we have already.”
G-H/V gave up seven forfeits against St. Edmonds. The only points scored for the Cards came from a forfeit at 285 pounds to Brady Baker.
Against Newman Catholic, the Cardinals had eight forfeits and there was not a match at 170 pounds. Nick Tusha’s pin at 220 pounds against the Knights’ Sal Haroutunian was the highlight of the meet. Tusha pinned Haroutunian in 2:39. G-H/V picked up two forfeits, one at 138 pounds to Colby Reid and the other at 182 pounds to Corey Dodd.
“We weren’t aggressive and we waited for our opponent instead of attacking,” said Smith. “We just need to get better and we will have time to do that. We need to keep improving and getting ourselves ready for the end of the year.”
The Cardinals are at Lake Mills on Thursday, Jan. 17, for a triangular. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
