Tough competition dogs GHV softball team

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team opened the season against some tough teams and that showed in their 0-3 record.

The Cardinals opened the 2014 season on Thursday, May 29, when they traveled to Hampton to face the Bulldogs.  H-D showed no mercy, as they held GHV scoreless on the way to a 10-0 victory.

“We faced some outstanding teams this week and you have to give them credit for how well they played,” said Coach Christi Weiser.  “That being said, we have to get better at both throwing strikes and having quality at-bats.”

The Cardinals only managed three hits off H-D’s pitcher, Ashlyn Hansen.  Mallory Van Oort recorded a double, while Sadhna Ades and Betshaida Larson each had singles.

Brooklyn Ossman was the losing pitcher for GHV.  She gave up eight hits, struck out two and walked two.

Humboldt 14, GHV 1 (5)

GHV managed one run in a home game against Humboldt on Friday, May 30.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Wildcats tallied 14 runs.

The Cardinals scored their lone run in the first inning by Tiara Van Gerpen.  Humboldt scored six in the first inning, two in the second and another six in the fourth inning.

Pitching duties for the night were shared between Sydney Childress and Brooklyn Ossman.  Childress took the loss on the mound, pitching three innings.  She struck out two, walked eight and gave up nine runs.  Ossman walked three and gave up five runs.  Humboldt’s pitcher, Avery Terwilliger, had six strike-outs, gave up five hits and walked none.

GHV collected five hits in the game.  Van Gerpen, Miranda Jackson, Mallory Van Oort, Payton Bamrick and Sadhna Ades all got singles.

Collecting one stolen base apiece were Van Gerpen, Jackson, Van Oort and Ossman.

North Union 18, GHV 1

Despite a lopsided score of 18-1, Coach Christi Weiser was encouraged by her team’s progress from the Humboldt game to the North Union game played the following night.

“I’m happy with the progress made from last night to this night.  We are excited to start conference play this week and to continue to learn, grow and improve in all facets of the game,” said Weiser.

Once again, the Cardinals scored in the first inning when Maddie Tusha was knocked home on an RBI by Mackenzie Van Gerpen.  In addition to Tusha’s single, Tiara Van Gerpen was the only other Cardinal to get a hit.

The sixth inning wouldn’t end for the Cardinals, as North Union collected 10 runs in that inning alone.

Tusha and Tiara Van Gerpen were the only players to get a stolen base.

Brooklyn Ossman took the loss on the mound, striking out two, walking one and giving up eight runs.  Sydney Childress and Bailee Pitzenberger each pitched an inning.
