Toppin paces Ventura boys track team
The Ventura boys track team competed in two meets last week. Monday, April 2, the team competed at the CWL meet held in Britt and on Thursday, April 5, they were at Clarion.
CWL Meet
Sophomore Joel Toppin picked up two first place medals to pace the Vikings. He ran the 3200 meter run in 10:39.44 and the 1600 meter run in 4:55.87. He also placed second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:17.96.
Josh Miller placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 31’4.50”.
Ventura had three sixth place finishes. Zach Zwiefel ran the 200 meter dash in 25.99. The 1600 meter relay, consisting of Miller, Kevin Boehnke, Jon Haag and Jeff O’Brien ran the race in 4:20. The 4x100 meter relay team also placed sixth with a time of 52.42. The 4x100 consisted of Miller, Boehnke, Haag and Zwiefel.
O’Brien picked up a seventh place finish in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:09.46.
“I have been impressed with what we have been able to do this early in the season,” said Coach Rod Huber. “The guys are getting comfortable and are improving.”
Clarion Relays
Joel Toppin again had a successful meet at Clarion, picking up two first place finishes and one third place.
“Joel has had an outstanding start to the year and he looks like a contender for a State invite in the 1600 and 3200 if he can keep improving,” said Coach Rod Huber.
Toppin ran the 3200 meter run in 10:40.52 and the 1600 meter run in 5:01.46 for the top places. He ran the 400 meter dash in 58.23 for third place.
Jon Haag picked up a fourth place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.44.
The 1600 meter relay team of Josh Miller, Kevin Boehnke, Haag and Jeff O’Brien placed fifth with a time of 4:27.79.
The 4x200 meter relay team placed sixth with a time of 1:49.06. Members of the relay were Miller, Boehnke, Haag and Zach Zwiefel.
O’Brien placed sixth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:08.67.
