Times falling for G-H/V girls
It was a good night for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team on Tuesday, April 30. The team placed second in a field of eight. Forest City won the meet with 158 points, followed by G-H/V with 116 and Clear Lake with 85 team points. Also competing were Hampton-Dumont, Northwood, Newman, Belmond-Klemme and CAL.
“Although we haven’t had many meets, I am amazed at how well the girls are still bringing their times down,” said Coach Dyan Childress. “They have stayed positive and focused through it all.”
The team scored some points in field events, with Dasi Larson and Emily Mathews both picking up first place finishes. Larson threw the discus 37’00.75” and Mathews jumped 15’4.75” in the long jump. It was a one-two finish in the long jump, with Sola Stephenson finishing in second with a jump of 14’3”. Taylor Vossberg was third in the high jump, clearing 4’8”.
Two relay teams picked up first place finishes. The shuttle hurdle team of Stacy Hackenmiller, Lizzy Henely, Stephenson and Mathews won with a time of 1:10.66. The sprint medley team of Stephenson, Henely, Vossberg and Maddie Tusha finished with a time of 1:59.66.
Top individual winners included Mathews in the 100 meter hurdles. She won with a time of 15.89. Tusha placed first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 61.66. Tiara Van Gerpen had the winning time in the 1500 meter run, 5:37.64.
“We’ll see what Districts brings on Thursday. This week is always an exciting one,” said Childress.
