Three Cardinals earn spots on the NIC All-Conference lists

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team had three players named to the North Iowa Conference All-Conference lists. Seniors Josh Theobald and Braden Meints were named NIC First Team, while fellow senior Spencer Shaw was named to the NIC Second Team. Cade Baker, a sophomore, earned Honorable Mention recognition.

 Theobald, who is a pitcher/infielder for the Cardinals, was a leading offensive player this season. He collected 31 hits on the season, 12 of those being doubles. He had 13 RBIs and stole 11 bases. On the mound, Theobald had a record of 3-4. He led the team with 78 strikeouts and had a ERA of 2.64.
 Meints, who was the team’s catcher, was also a strong offensive player for the Cards. He led the team in homeruns, with three. He had a total of 27 hits. He knocked in 18 RBIs for the season and had eight stolen bases. Behind the plate, Meinst recorded only two errors.
 Shaw, who was a pitcher/infielder this season, was a solid offensive player. He earned two victories on the mound for the Cardinals and had 37 strike-outs. He was one of the team’s top infielders, recording 33 assists in league play. At the plate, Shaw led the team with 13 walks and he had a total of 18 hits, three being doubles and one a triple. He was also an effective base stealer, tallying 10 stolen bases.
 For an underclassman, Baker impressed many with his ability at bat. Baker’s batting average was .269, which included four doubles and triple in his 21 hits. Baker, who plays center field, only had two errors on 36 attempts in the outfield.
 As a team, GHV competed the conference season with a record of 7-7, which landed them in fifth place in the NIC. The team’s overall record was 8-20.
