Sunset reopens
The second half of the school year is beginning in the former Sunset Elementary School for students taking classes through the Lakeside Alternative (School) Program. The program, serving Garner-Hayfield, Ventura and Clear Lake School District students, had been housed at the Ventura/G-H Middle School in Ventura.
Clear Lake School leaders proposed use of the vacant building to the G-H School Board and reached an agreement last month. Lakeside currently has 13 seats; seven seats purchased by the Clear Lake district and six from G-H/V. The shared alternative program has been a part of G-H, Ventura and Clear Lake for over 10 years.
The Clear Lake Board has guaranteed Sunset will house the program for a minimum of three years. Other stipulations agreed upon by the districts ensure Ventura remains fiscal agent for the program; and language be written into the 28E agreement stating the per pupil budget will be equal to state allotted per pupil dollars (currently about $6,100) without approval by all boards.
