Successful week on the road
The Clear Lake girls team won a pair of matches on the road last week, defeating Osage 6-3 and Charles City 6-3, and improving their overall dual record to 7-2. In addition, the team finished third overall in conference play.
CL 6, Osage 3
Number one singles Lindsey Loudenburg jumped out to an early lead for the Lions with her consistent play, recording a 10-7 win over Amber Schwarting.
Gretchen Jones dropped a close number two singles match, 9-11, but teamed up with Loudenburg to avenge the loss in doubles play. The duo dominated Klaire Chisholm and partner Schwarting, 10-3.
Kirsten Jordan and Kylie Bottjen were winners in their singles matches, 10-3 and 10-5, in the numbers three and four positions.
“Our doubles teams continue to work on putting more pressure on their opponents at the net,” said Coach Mary Jo Peterson.
Jordan and Bottjen crushed their doubles opponents, 10-0, while Kiersten Baalson and teammate Reagan Brackey also recorded a 10-6 doubles win for the Lions.
CL 6, Charles City 3
The Lions met tough number one and two singles players from Charles City, Meaghan Miller and Hannah Carr. Clear Lake’s number one Lindsey Loudenburg lost her first set, 1-6, and made a comeback in the second but fell just short to Miller, 5-7.
Number two Gretchen Jones did a great job putting pressure on early in her match with a 6-4 first set lead, but was forced into a 2-6 second set and super-tie breaker 8-10 loss with Carr.
Kirsten Jordan recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at number three singles, as did Kylie Bottjen, 6-2, 6-1. Bottjen remains undefeated in singles play for the season.
Kiersten Baalson pulled out a tough match at number five singles. She took the first set 6-4, but fell just short in the second, 4-6. She then won a hard fought super-tie breaker, 11-9. “Kiersten refused to give up. I’m very proud of her efforts,” said Coach Peterson.
Clear Lake was up 4-2 in the match going into doubles play.
Loudenburg and Jones battled with Miller and Carr again, but fell just short, 2-6, 3-6.
Number two doubles Jordan and Bottjen defeated a competitive Julia Page and Sarah Barry, 6-4, 6-2 to secure the fifth team and overall match win.
Reagan Brackey and Chloe Mueller teamed up to score the final team point with an 8-6 win at three doubles.
“With two super-tie breakers and other close play today, I was proud of the confidence they displayed in their overall demeanor and shot making,” said Coach Peterson.

Invitational Tournament
After a full day of competitive tennis, Clear Lake placed third out of six teams at an North Central Invitational Tournament held in Waverly Saturday, May 2.
In both doubles and singles play, a round- robin shortened format, based on the number of games won, was used to calculate overall rankings. Every player competed in a minimum of 10 matches for the day in which every point and game was crucial. Clear Lake finished with 31 team points, just behind Waverly (51) and Decorah (41), but outscored Osage (25), Charles City (22), and Oelwein (16).
Clear Lake’s top four players all finished third at their position. Overall singles rankings placed Lindsey Loudenburg third at number one singles, followed by Gretchen Jones, Kirsten Jordan and Kylie Bottjen at number two, three and four singles.
Kiersten Baalson placed sixth at number five singles and Reagan Brackey was third at number six singles.
In doubles, Loudenburg and Jones placed fifth at number one doubles. The team actually tied with Osage, but lost 5-4 in the head-to-head meeting. Bottjen and Jordan were third at number two doubles and Brackey and Chloe Mueller were third at number three doubles.
Sportsmanship awards and All-Academic Team awards are presented to juniors and seniors with a 3.45 grade point average or higher. Clear Lake’s seniors Kirsten Jordan, Lindsey Loudenburg, and Kylie Bottjen, along with junior Reagan Brackey received this award.
An Athlete of the Year was also selected by the coaches. Clear Lake’s Lindsey Loudenburg was honored as one of a three-way tie for this award.
“We had a great day of tennis and gained valuable experience,” said Coach Peterson.
