Strong C-G-D team blanks volleyball team
League-leading Clarion-Goldfield-Dows shut out Clear Lake, 3-0, in a match played Thursday, Sept. 22.
The final score did not reflect the closeness of the match.
“Overall, I thought we competed well against conference leader, CGD,” said Head Coach Heather Johnson. “We came so close in set one, losing 24-26. Set two started with a rotation violation that set us behind and we couldn’t quite recover, but still battled well only losing by four points. I feel like we just lost steam in set three and started really down and you just can’t do that against teams like CGD.”
The Lions dropped the second set 21-25 and the third by a score of 14-25.
Freshman Ayla Johnson had her best match this season so far, racking up seven kills and getting several block touches in the match.
Hannah Blaha also had a strong blocking night for the Lions. The senior tallied two solo blocks, a block assist, and several touches at the net.
Xada Johnson led the offense with 15 kills and 10 digs.
Carsyn Holland was the teams’ best server with 17 successes and two aces.
Macey Holck and Holland combined for 23 assists. Makella Jacobs had three assists and was 12/12 on the service line.
“Controlling our side is really what we need to continue working on,” said Coach Johnson. “It is clear that we can compete with that team and I want us to step up and start winning sets and matches that I know we can win!”
The Lions (11-7, 1-3) hosted their final home match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 27, against Webster City. The team is then off until Thursday, Oct. 6, when they travel to St. Edmond Catholic for a NCC match. The Gaels are winless in the NCC. On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Lions will participate in a tournament at Mason City, with matches scheduled against Central Springs, Osage, Humboldt, Mason City and Waverly-Shell Rock.
