Six wrestlers advance to District meet; team places second

The Clear Lake wrestling team placed second at Saturday’s Sectional meet and advanced six wrestlers to the District meet next week at Hampton.  Osage captured the Sectional title with 233 points.  Clear Lake edged Forest City 198 to 194.  They were followed by Riceville/St. Ansgar with 164, Central Springs with 104 and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura with 50.

“We had a pretty good day.  Obviously, we would have liked to get more guys to Districts, but that is the way it goes.  We competed hard,” said Coach Gary Weber.  

Ryan Schmalen (106), Ryan Faught (120), Andres Gonzalez (132), Carson Farmer (138), Brice Wilcke (170) and Connor Nosbisch (182) all advanced to Saturday’s District Meet and have good chances of making it to state, according to their coach.

Here are Coach Weber’s comments about each wrestler’s performance at Saturday’s Sectional Meet held in Osage.

106: Ryan Schmalen, first place.   Ryan is 34-4 and looking very good. He has a chance to be very successful the next two weeks. Schmalen pinned Forest City’s Andrew Mettry in the championship round.

113: Brennen Doebel, third place.  Brennen wrestled very well, pinning state-ranked JD Sliger in the semi finals. Sliger was 41-5. He then was leading state qualifier, Chris Hanke of Osage,  in the third period but was beaten.  He lost his wrestleback to Pierce Gelhaus, of Forest City, and placed third. Brennen weighs 107 pounds and is competing against kids weighing 118 by the end of the day. He is having a great year. 

120: Ryan Faught, second place. Ryan is 30-10 and only a freshman. He won his wrestleback 9-2 and has a good chance at state.  Brady Jennings, of Osage, pinned Faught in the first place match.

126: Spencer Orr, fifth place. Spencer has learned alot this year and just keeps improving. He is fun to coach.

132: Andres Gonzalez, first place.  Andres had been sick all week and he wrestled extremely well. That is a real credit to him to be able to compete with the best when he is ill. Alot of people would not even have wrestled Saturday,  but he got tough and advanced. Gonzalez was a 9-2 winner in the first place match over Douglas Perrin, of Osage.

138: Carson Farmer, second place.  Carson has been banged up, but keeps battling and is at Districts.   We feel he has a good chance of making it to State. Osage’s Christian Fox pinned Farmer in the first place match.

145: Aaron Boeshart, fourth place. Aaron lost 8-6 to the sectional champion, so he was close. He is a good kid and we will miss him. Thatcher Goodale, of Osage, posted an 8-2 decision over Boeshart in the third place match.

152: Blake Kelso, fourth place.  Blake is very close in his matches. He is only a junior, so we feel he is primed to make a statement his senior year. Landon Johnson, of Saint Ansgar/Riceville, defeated Kelso 8-3 in the third place match.

160: Logan Wilcke, fourth place. Logan wrestled the sectional champion Colin Barker  from Osage very well. He is just a sophomore, so with some hard work in the weight room, he should be very tough. In the third place match Riley Moore, of Forest City, pinned  Wilcke.

170: Brice Wilcke, first place. Brice is 35-3 and having a great year.  When he decides to shoot his double, he is tough to beat.   Wilcke  defeated Dillon Johnson, of Osage,  7-2, in the first place match.
