School Board hires KES to secure substitutes

CLHS band director resigns; advertising begins for three positions

The Clear Lake School Board approved advertising for three important school positions Monday night.  The district finds itself in need of a Middle School principal, high school band instructor and part-time nurse.

Last week it was announced that Middle School Principal Dan Long would be leaving to become principal at Mason City 

High School in the fall.  Monday night the Board accepted the resignation of high school Band Director Griffin.  Griffin, who came to the district in August 2004, is leaving to take the high school band position at Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.  

School Nurse Bethany Hythecker also asked and was approved for a reduction in the hours of her job.  She will drop from full-time to .6 time, leaving the district in need of a nurse to fulfill .4 of the position.  

“Becoming a high school principal at some time has been a goal for me since going through my education leadership program,” said Long.  “I look forward to joining Mason City High School, where I served as a teacher for eight years prior to being the middle school principal in Clear Lake.  This will be a good opportunity to work with staff to continue moving ahead their efforts to challenge and help students be successful.”

Griffin also said he has enjoyed the students and families of Clear Lake.  “We have made a lot of great music and memories together.  Some of my favorites include a trip to Chicago, a 1980s halftime show, collaborating on musicals, qualifying for jazz championships, and performing a concert band piece by Daniel Bukvich titled ‘Voodoo.’  The most rewarding thing is seeing what students can achieve when they apply some effort.  They often surprise themselves with what they can achieve.   I look forward to remaining in the area and to new opportunities.”

In other business Monday, the Board approved the hiring of Kelly Educational Services (KES) to handle the hiring of substitute teachers for the district.  Based on usage history of substitutes in the district, the Board voted 4-1 to pay KES $22,399 to handle all aspects of the district’s need for substitute teachers.
