Schedules announced for newly created Class 2A football districts

Clear Lake and GHV will face each other

Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football fans who are anxious to see the two teams face off in newly created Class 2A districts will have to wait until the final game of the 2014 regular season.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released 2014 and 2015 schedules for high school teams on Friday.

Clear Lake, a perennial power in Class 3A, dropped down a class size to join GHV, along with Clarion-Goldfield, Estherville-Lincoln Central, Forest City, Hampton-Dumont and Osage in its district.  

The Lions will keep the Mason City High School game, which was revived two years ago after a more than 80-year lapse.  The Clear Lake vs. Mohawk game will kick off both the 2014 and 2015 schedule.  Clear Lake’s other non-district contests are with Webster City and Waverly-Shell Rock.

GHV will open the 2014 and 2015 campaigns against rival West Hancock, followed by another non-district game against Humboldt.  The Cardinal’s other non-district game will be against Charles City.

When the class and district changes were announced by the IHSAA in January Clear Lake Head Football Coach Fred Wieck said he was not surprised by the move.   He anticipated that due to enrollment numbers the Lions would drop to 2A and noted he and the team look forward to playing some different teams.  Wieck added the change in class assignment does not present any changes in the Lion football program, merely a new schedule. 

GHV Head Coach Scott VanDusseldorp said the 2A district is honored to have the opportunity to participate in a district that has such strong traditions. GHV, Hampton-Dumont and Forest City all qualified for the Class 2A State Play-offs in 2013.
