Sale of longtime local business announced
Jacobson Electric name, location remain
The sale of one of Clear Lake’s most enduring businesses has been announced.
Larry Jacobson, who took over ownership of Jacobson Electric in 1994 after the retirement of his father, Warren, said he has sold the business to David Poppy.
“As I have approached retirement age it has been my desire to sell the business to someone that will carry on the legacy that my dad, Warren Jacobson, began in 1960. Good service and quality work. I am confident that Dave Poppy is the man for that job.”
Jacobson Electric founder Warren Jacobson was a 1947 graduate of Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was employed with Rice Electric in Clear Lake from 1947 until going out on his own, offering industrial, residential and farm electrical work.
Warren and his wife, Betty, valued family and community, which was a recipe for success.
Warren’s father, Lee, was the first bookkeeper for the business. Son Larry joined the firm in May 1972 after completing his apprenticeship. Larry and his wife, Sue, and family moved to Clear Lake then. Like his father, Larry served on the Clear Lake Board of Adjustment and enjoyed membership in the Noon Lions Club. The business has supported the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce since its beginnings.
Helping the business to make a smooth transition, the business name, location and phone number will all remain the same. Even Larry will still be on staff-- assisting Poppy in any way he can.
“I want to thank (our customers) for over 50-years of business in Clear Lake,” said Larry. “It has been my privilege to serve so many of you.”
Poppy is a licensed master electrician who gradated from Associated Builders and Contractors of Iowa four-year Electrical Apprenticeship Program with honors. He became an apprenticeship instructor and holds an Iowa Class A Master electrical license. Poppy has over 13-years of experience which includes residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural electrical installations.
Dave and his wife, Sara, have three children, eight-year-old Kylie, seven-year-old Kaden, and five-year-old Peyton.
“Quality and personal service are of high importance to me,” said Poppy. “I intend to continue the fine tradition of Jacobson Electric.”
