Angie Rose and Andy Turnbull were crowned as Clear Lake High School’s 1997 Homecoming queen and king. Kim Dwyer was the speaker at this year’s coronation ceremony and Homecoming pep rally Friday afternoon.
Clear Lake and Mason City fire and rescue officials stood by, prepared for the worst, but a Colorado pilot and his family successfully and safely crash landed their six-passenger airplane Thursday at the Mason City Municipal Airport.
Governor Terry Branstad will join North Iowa community and school leaders in an educational forum to discuss the recommendations of the Commission on Education Excellence for the 21st Ventura at E.B. Stillman Auditorium.
Ventura High School students have chosen their queen and king candidates as part of Homecoming Week. Queen candidates are Angie Avery, Stacie Bush and Jami Sonney. King candidates are Will Pueggel, Nick Korth and Luke Brager.
The Clear Lake Fire Department fought a wind-driven fire in a shed on the Arvid and Dixie Matson farm Sunday afternoon.
Law enforcement officials are asking for the public’s help in finding the person or persons responsible for damaging a green at All-Vets Golf Course. An unknown liquid was poured on the green at hole No. 3. The message, “99 Rules,” was written with the liquid that killed the grass.
New playground equipment is being installed in City Park. A 12-foot cyclone slide, a wave slide, rings, cargo net climber and fire pole are just some of the special features of the new fun center purchased at a price of $16,250.
Angie Thompson, an eighth grader at Clear Lake Junior High School, and Patrick Finnegan, a seventh grader, have been named as the top salespersons for their respective grades in the just completed school magazine sale.
Clear Lake was defeated, 47-13, in its Homecoming game by Charles City. Clear Lake didn’t score until the third quarter when Casey Cooney threw a 14 yard pass to Dustin DenHartog. The kick by Brendon Lamont was good. The final TD was in the fourth quarter when Cooney threw a 24 yard pass to Adam Hanley.
Clear Lake’s cross country team braved rainy conditions when they traveled to Humboldt. The girls placed ninth out of 22 teams. Erin Oelschlaeger ran a 13:25 to lead the girls. She finished 24th. Leif Kennedy finished in fourth place on the boys team with a time of 17:22.
The Ventura Vikings football team was defeated by North Central of Manly, 45-22, in Friday night competition.
Adam Froiland and Adam Cash each had four solo tackles. Jared Ringus was a workhorse on offense, carrying the ball 27 times for 202 yards. Will Pueggel ran the ball 12 times for 81 yards.

As a kick-off for the Oct. 1 bicycle Marathon, Bill Riley, KRNT television personality from Des Moines, visited the Clear Lake High School, Junior High and Ventura High School Friday morning to explain the marathon to students. Riley anticipates about 400 to take part in the marathon which he describes as a “fun afternoon.” Riley suggested a goal of $5,000 for the marathon.
The Clear Lake Fish Hatchery will observe National Hunting and Fishing Day Sept. 23, with a public open house from noon-4 p.m.
The Lions, having won their first game of the season, came back to play Iowa Falls and were upended, 34-14. A highlight was Tom Hendricks picking up a Cadet fumble in the end zone for six points.
Playing at the Lake Theater is Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal in “What’s up, Doc?”

Milk at the Clear Lake dairies will be 18¢ a quart retail henceforth.
The 1947 Lions football squad includes: Don Bisgrove, LeRoy Olson, Bob Replogie, Kay Ellerson, Don Nelson, Pete Watkins, Ron Petersen, Gar Bieber, Bob Brown, Arlin Dusenberg, Wayne Hill, John Monaghen, Ralph Ott, Dick Azbill, Jim Bawden, Jack Roseland, Dan Rice, Chet Garth, Wes Edgar, Jack Kimball, Veryle Henricksen and Ray Ebaugh. Coaches are Bob Heston and Dick Banning.
The Lions beat Garner in the season opener, 14-0.
Stafford Post of the American Legion filed suit in district court to ask the court to establish title of the All Veterans Social Center as a joint ownership of the Legion Post and Center’s board of trustees.
The Chamber raised $30,000 for the purchase of the Clear Lake Country Club and an additional $15,000 for the improvement of the property through public subscription.

September 1932
George F. Gerk, of Lake View Gardens, has had wonderful success with his tomato crop this season. Besides being of fine flavor, the yield has also been very bountiful.
Hanford MacNider of Mason City has resigned as United States minister to Canada in order to devote his time to private affairs.
Billy Schober Sr. and son Billy Jr., returned Saturday morning from Des Moines and Omaha where they won in a wrestling match at Des Moines Thursday night and at Omaha Friday night.
The football squad of 40, being reduced by five ineligible players, leaves Coach Johnston the problem to working in second string men on the first squad.
