The Clear Lake School Board is openly supportive of implementing an all-day, every day kindergarten program in the district. The board is mindful of the reality of the proposal - which is a price tag of $205,000 to $306,000. That money would need to come from a property tax increase or a new income surtax.
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad held a public forum in Clear Lake Friday to receive public input about the recently released report from The Governor’s Commission on Educational Excellence for the 21st Century.
A Clear Lake woman was witness to history when she was in Paris at the time of Princess Diana’s death. Sheila Whitecotton, a co-owner of Hair Designers in Clear Lake, said while in Paris, she stayed in a hotel within blocks of the Ritz Hotel, where Diana had dined before she died in the now-famous fatal car accident. No one in Paris knew Diana was even in town, according to Whitecotton. “We were up real late that night, and heard sirens all night, but thought nothing of it since we heard sirens every night,” said Whitecotton. She said the city was filled with mourning when they heard the news of her death.
Six Clear Lake High School students were chosen as Outstanding Delegates at the Regional Model United National Conference held at NIACC. Selected from CLHS were Tyler Turek, Matthew McNamara, Sam Langholz, Katie Kennedy, Jeff Scudder and Dean Walston.
No Clear Lake football player, coach or fan would be reluctant to admit that after the Lions’ 3-0 start, their two subsequent losses were somewhat disheartening. But Clear Lake gave the crowd something to cheer about again Friday as the Lions amassed 446-yards on the ground en route to a convincing 45-20 victory over Webster City. Improvement by the offensive line is huge to the team’s success, said Coach Fred Wieck. Tim Secory led the team in rushing with 133 yards over 18 carries. Nate Carney had 105-yards in 17 attempts.
The Clear Lake volleyball team defeated Hampton-Dumont with scores of 15-6, 15-3 and 15-9. Anna Teigland led the attack with 10 kills and 10 digs. Kimberly Bacon went 18/19 serving with eight kills to compliment a perfect 10-10 serving performance. Rachel Handeland had an impressive all-around night by hitting 15-16 with five kills. She also had nine digs and was 15/16 serving.
Brad Spilman put his name into the Ventura record books with an outstanding performance at the Eagle Grove Invitational. Spilman became the fastest man in the history of Ventura cross country with a time of 16:34. He broke a record set in 1988 by Dave Mortensen by 25 seconds. Spilman’s time of the three-mile course was good enough to place him fourth overall in the field of 13 teams.
Mark Maverick, a stage hypnotist and illusionist, will present his show, “Mysteries of the Mind,” at Lu’s Lounge, located on Buddy Holly Place.
The American Chiropractic Association’s Council on Neurology recognized Dr. Scott E. Schichtl in commencement exercises in Key West, Fla., Sept. 7. Dr. Schichtl is a 1986 graduate of Ventura High School.

Su Peterson was named Clear Lake’s 1972 Homecoming Queen Friday afternoon at a pep assembly.
Janice Myklestad, Debbie Larson and Debbie Brager will vie for the crown at Ventura’s Homecoming festivities. Ventura will play Meservey-Thornton at 7:30 p.m.
Ken Bales, vice president of the Community State Bank, received the gavel as president of the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce at the annual dinner meeting of the chamber.
Senator Harold E. Hughes of Iowa and TV star Dennis Weaver, Hollywood, will be among the featured Democrats attending the Third Congressional District Democratic dinner at Clear Lake Oct. 14, at the Holiday Motor Lodge.
The Lions suffered a defeat in their 1972 Homecoming game to the Algona Bulldogs, 34-7. Clear Lake’s only score came late in the third quarter, Rich Chapman hit Paul Jacobson on a 73-yard pass play.

Last Thursday, Ventura’s long awaited fire truck arrived. A thorough test was given Saturday when it was driven to Clear Lake with Ed Nelson in the driver’s seat.
A new financial set-up was proposed by the retiring officers of the Chamber of Commerce. A higher membership fee was suggested. The cost of operating the Chamber last year was $19,000. If it had not been for a balance of $3,018 from the year before, the Chamber would have been about $3,000 short.
Art Butts sank a well for Bill Ward this week. He will use it for air conditioning of his funeral home and have the water piped into his house. The well went down about 180 feet.
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Toinby were crowned hobo king and queen at a wiener roast and hobo party held by the Couple Club of the Zion Lutheran Church.

One cannot pass the Overton Greenhouse on the paved road opposite the cemetery without experiencing a thrill of joy. Mrs. H.E. Overton is proving without a doubt that she knows what sort of greenhouse this little city needs. She and her husband have purchased the Clear Lake Flower Gardens from Mr. Pushee. She is investing not less than $5,000 in her project. We hope everyone will support her.
A federal man came here yesterday to enforce the cigarette law. A number of boys were given fines and those selling to minors will be dealt with severely.
Sondrol’s has boy’s school knickers for only 69¢ a pair.
About four inches of rain fell Sunday night.
Clear Lake defeated the fast Greene team by a score of 7-6. Giles and Van Horn did a beautiful job of passing and Captain Mack was s tower of strength on both offense and defense.
