Ranked CL girls roll
The Clear Lake girls continue to climb in the rankings on the strength of two more impressive wins last week. The 4-1 Lions, ranked seventh in Class 3A, will be on the road to Eagle Grove Friday for their final game before the holiday break.
CL 72, Webster City 27
If the sports adage “defense wins championships” is correct, the Lions are on their way.
Tuesday, the Clear Lake girls held Webster City to just 14 points through three quarters on the way to a 72-27 victory.
Trudy Peterson sunk three of four three-point attempts and finished with 13 points in the win. Lindsey Loudenberg collected 13 points, making five of seven field goal attempts and sinking three of four free throw attempts. Also finishing in double figures were Bailey Kibsgaard and Logan Anderson with 11 apiece and Katie Hewett with 10.
The Lions shot 62 percent from the floor during the game.
“Our defensive pressure is really good right now. Girls are making plays and finishing after getting steals,” said Coach Bart Smith. “Our bench is just as important to us as the starting five. It allows us to play the style that we can play. I’m pleased with the unselfish play of everyone and you can win a lot of games during a season if that continues.”
Madison Faber scored four points for the Lions and made five steals. The Lions finished with 28 steals, led by Kibsgaard with six. Kibsgaard also slammed two blocks in the game.
Sidney Borrill came off the bench to score six points, Emily Phalen three, and Carney Frahm added one point.
CL 57, H-D 25
Solid defense again provided a win Friday night at Hampton. The Lions improved to 4-0 in the conference with a 57-25 victory over the Bulldogs.
“Madi Faber and Emily Phalen had the task of guarding the leading scorer in the conference in Jessica Speak. They and the team held her to just three points,” pointed out Coach Smith.
In fact, the Lion defense kept every H-D player in single digits for scoring and held them to four single digit quarters.
“I was pleased to see that and we are proud of our girls for accomplishing that,” added Smith. - Read More Via e-Edtion
