Patricia K. "Pat" Smith

Patricia K. “Pat” Smith, 82, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023 at her residence.

There will be a Celebration of Life in Clear Lake at a later date. Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded, and inurnment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Pat was born on April 29, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Ione (Blacksmith) Houston.  She graduated in 1959 from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and continued her education at the University of Iowa. While on summer break, Pat met Doug Smith in Clear Lake and on Sept. 1, 1962 they were united in marriage.  They were blessed with two children, Christopher and Stacy.  Due to Doug’s job in human resources, the family moved frequently across the United States. They eventually settled near extended family in Lisle, Ill., when their children were in junior high and high school. 

Pat worked in the accounting department at the Bank of Lisle for a few years before joining Healthstaffers, her sister Rose’s business in Chicago. She was the bookkeeper for their four locations and staff. Despite the commute to and from the city, she loved her job. After her retirement in 2001, Pat and Doug followed their daughter, Stacy, and her family to the Quad Cities. Pat was a devoted caregiver to Doug throughout his battle with Parkinson’s Disease. They celebrated 58 years of marriage prior to Doug’s passing in 2020.

Pat loved her family, and especially cherished spending time with her grandchildren and having family gatherings. She enjoyed the outdoors, whether she was walking, swimming, or boating. In her spare time, she also enjoyed crafting, baking, watching movies, and attending musicals.  She was happiest when spending summers with her family at Clear Lake.

Those left to honor her memory are her children, Christopher (Andrea) Smith, of Frederick, Maryland and Stacy (Rodd) Schick, of Bettendorf; two grandchildren, Melody (Colin) Mattox, of Portland, Ore. and Kyle (fiancé, Mallory Obenauf) Schick, of Iowa City; sister, Rose Houston, of Chicago; brother, Larry (Mary) Houston, of Chicago Heights, Ill.; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Doug.
