Oweso Club celebrates 100 years of service

 A handful of remaining members celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Oweso Club Tuesday, July 1, in the Fellowship Room at Zion Lutheran Church. The group, which at one time had a dozen to 25 members but now has dwindled to about eight, is not officially disbanding, but it will no longer hold monthly meetings.

 “We’ll still get together a few times a year,” said Phyllis Luick, of rural Clear Lake. “We’ve been part of each others’ lives for so long, we will always be in touch.”

 Luick’s mother, Erma Thrams, became a member of the Lake Township Oweso Club 22 years after it was started. In 1914 the group was formed by rural neighbors living south and east of Clear Lake who shared fellowship and homemaking tips and enjoyed impacting the community in kind and unexpected ways.
 Phyllis joined the group in the 1950s and currently serves as its president.
 “We have given money to a variety of charities and helped in ways we could,” she said. For example, club members took baked goods to the Burchinal Elevator at harvest time. “The men really appreciated that,” she said. Over the years club members also assembled “comfort kits” for soldiers and sent eggs and clothing to an Iowa Christian home to help children in need.
