Neva V. Elting, 96, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. A funeral service for Neva was held Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Reverend Rhoda Preston officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions may be designated to the Neva Elting Memorial Fund in care of her family.
Neva was born July 11, 1916 in Lisbon, N.D., to Howard and Elizabeth Harding. She was the middle child of eight siblings. She was raised in Clear Lake, attending Clear Lake schools and graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1934. While in high school, she was active in the school band, playing several instruments and eventually was the drum majorette for the entire band.
After high school, Neva worked for several years in Washington D.C., Chicago, Ill., and St. Paul, Minn. In 1945, she was united in marriage to Loran Elting and settled in Clear Lake. To this union, two children were born, Jim and Bill. Neva took a job with the Clear Lake Bank and Trust and worked there up to her retirement in the late 1980’s. After retiring, she remained very active in quilting, playing the organ, weekly card clubs, bowled in a bowling league well into her 80’s and she was a volunteer guide for the Kinney Pioneer Museum. Neva traveled to Africa, Japan, and Europe and made annual trips to visit her sons. Neva was an avid golfer and shot an incredible hole-in-one, twice. She enjoyed her daily coffee club with her special friends, Pat Anderson and Betty Anderson.
Neva is survived by her two children, Bill (Marie) Elting and Jim (Julie) Elting; grandchildren, Ryan Elting, Andrew (Jessica) Elting, Bill Elting Jr., and Lisa (Jason) Bergstrom; two great-grandchildren, Travis Elting and Brian Bergstrom; and along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loran; her parents; and her seven siblings, Garnet, Boyd, Reeves, Earl, June, Lois, and Shirley.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
