Melvin Weisbrod
A funeral service for Melvin Weisbrod, of Ringsted, Iowa passed away Aug. 6, 2014, at the age of 94, at Valley Vue Nursing Home. He was a kind and gentle person.
A funeral service was held on Aug. 11, 2014, at United Lutheran Church, in Ringsted. Burial followed at South Walnut Cemetery, Graettinger, Iowa. Arrangements were by Henry-Olson Funeral Home with Pastor Lauri Boysen officiating.
Melvin was born March 16, 1920, on a farm near Ringsted. He attended Ringsted schools and attended Ringsted High School. He farmed in Ringsted his entire life. Mel took ag courses at Iowa State, in Ames. He was a gleaner for the Iowa State Corn Husking Bee in the 1930’s. Melvin was on the elevator board for many years. He was also a charter member and President of the Danish/American Fellowship. He was a member of the United Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council in different positions. He was a field assessor in Ringsted and Armstrong for many years. In the early 70’s he received an award for having the best corn yield in the Northern Iowa District.
Melvin married Dolores Jacobson on Oct. 27, 1957. Mel always would say “he married a teacher for life.” Two children, Melodee and Scott, were born and loved. Mel loved his family, and enjoyed his extended family. He especially enjoyed his three grandchildren, Kirsten and Kara Reineke and Dylon Weisbrod.
Melvin enjoyed gardening, farming, travel, music, dancing and “Lutefisk.” Many vacations were taken with trips to Denmark and Norway with friends there. He also saw relatives there. He and his family vacationed in most states and enjoyed Cape Cod and Door County on different vacations. He spent several winters in Arizona in his early years with his parents. As a family, we would drive in the evening to watch the sunsets.
Mel always took pride in his garden, especially his muskmelon and watermelon. He sold some to Bonnicksen Grocery Store.
Mel is deeply missed and was devoted to his wife, Dolores, who survives him. They were married for 56 years. Also surviving are daughter, Melodee (Ernie) Reineke; son, Scott (Sandy) Weisbrod; and grandchildren, Kirsten and Kara Reineke, Dylon Weisbrod; and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Edith Weisbrod. Blessed be his loving memory.
