Marlene Barkela

Marlene Teresa Barkela, 83, passed away November 4, 2024, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. A private family memorial service was held, with Mark Doebel officiating. Marlene’s inurnment will take place at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Marlene was born on January 13, 1941, to Virgil and Adeline (Eiffler) Hidding. While attending Thornton High School, Marlene lettered in softball as a pitcher, showcasing her athletic abilities. After graduation, she embraced the demanding work of farm life, dedicating herself to yard work and caring for her livestock of cows, pigs and sheep.

Her hardworking nature led her to a role as a housekeeper at Super 8 Motel in Clear Lake, where her appreciation for cleanliness truly shone.

Marlene had a passion for gardening fruits and vegetables in the summertime, skillfully canning enough to enjoy throughout the winter months. Although she claimed she wasn’t a dog person, she often delighted in the company of her great-grand pups, who could frequently be found curled up on her lap as she watched her favorite game shows.

sional card games, a bowl of strawberry sherbet ice cream, and listening to classic country music. Her quiet joys and love for life’s simple pleasures left a lasting impact on her family and friends.

Marlene is survived by her son, Jerry (Lori) Barkela; grandchildren, Adam (Kate) Barkela and David (Hailey) Barkela; great-grandchildren, Maren Barkela, Amelia Barkela, and Henry Barkela.

Preceding her in death are her parents Virgil and Adeline Hidding: sister, Dorothy Wonsmos, brother, Fred Hidding and her companion, Jerry Davis.
