Local singers take their talents to The Big Apple

Members of Una Vocis Choral Ensemble have returned to North Iowa.  The singers and their artistic director, Dennis Lee, spent five days and four nights in New York City preparing for their March 24 concert in Carnegie Hall.  

Andrew Swyter, Una Vocis baritone, snagged one of the coveted solos in Eric Whitacre’s “Cloudburst.”  After hearing Swyter audition for the solo Whitacre, who also directed the rehearsals and performance, nodded in approval and said,

 “Monster.”  

“The eight hours we spent in rehearsal were probably the highlight of the trip for me,” said alto George Riesen.  “Whitacre brought such energy into the rehearsal hall.  All members of the mass choir had the notes memorized, so he was able to start shaping the music itself from the first moment.  Whitacre also shared personal experiences that led to his setting particular texts to music.  It was a powerful experience.  We are very grateful to the donors who helped make this trip possible for some of our members.  It has been a bonding experience.”
