Lions working hard

The Clear Lake boys pushed their record to 11-4 with a pair of wins last week.  The week also included a loss on the road to Fort Dodge St Ed’s.  The Lions now share a 10-4 mark in the North Central Conference with the Gaels.  Iowa Falls-Alden continues to lead the way at 12-2, followed by Humboldt at 11-3.

CL 72, C-G 56

The Lions had a powerful one-two punch against Clarion-Goldfield Tuesday, Jan. 22.  Spencer Davidson and Pete Swenson each scored 22 in the 72-56 win.  

Davidson used 10/12 shooting from the free throw line to boost his numbers, while Swenson dominated inside with 10/13 shooting.

Initially the game was much closer than the final score indicates. The Lions led 15-14 after one quarter and held a four-point half time lead, 32-28.  A big third quarter in which the Lions outscored the Cowboys 25-14 broke the game open.

“We got off to a slow start, but I thought we played with more energy in the second half.  The tempo in the first half just wasn’t good for us,” said Coach Kevin Kahler.  “We were able to get out and run in the second half and speed things up which seemed to get us going.  The third quarter was really the turning point in the game for us.”

Davis Dieken provided some good minutes off the bench, scoring eight points for the Lions.  Luke Schiller and Bryson Hamilton each scored six and Matt Stephany had four points.  Gavin Sheakley and Chase Lester had two points apiece.

Swenson and Hamilton were the leaders on the board with seven rebounds apiece.

CL 93, Eagle Grove 45

All 15 players on the Lion roster played and 12 of them scored, as the Lions routed Eagle Grove 93-45 Thursday, Jan. 24.

The Lions opened strong with 31 first quarter points.  They led at the half, 43-25.

“Offensively,  we took good shots and made a high percentage of them,” reported Coach Kahler.  “I was happy with our balanced scoring; we were able to get 12 kids in the scoring column and five guys in double figures.  We were also able to make eight threes as a team, so we shot the ball really well.  We have work to do defensively, but we’re starting to shoot the ball much better.”
